Underlay Pad For Carpet

Underlay padAn underlay pad can extend the life of your carpet, absorb sound, cover minor imperfections on the floor, and provide insulation. Besides, there are two main types of underlay, which are foam and rubber. Even though a felt underlay is still used for woven carpets, it’s becoming less common. Like carpet, underlay comes in many different qualities and grades.
Additionally, the Underlay pad should be firm but comfortable. As a guide, if you stand on the underlay, you shouldn’t be able to feel the floor with the heel of your shoe. Ask your retailer to put a sample of the carpet you want over different underlays and walk on it so you can feel the difference. Therefore, you should replace your old rug and your underlay pad.

Indeed, the Carpet Institute of Australia has developed the Australian Carpet Classification Scheme (ACCS). And it’s a voluntary industry labelling and grading system for all fibre carpets and major suppliers.

Furthermore, an ACCS label gives the carpet a rating of six for residential use. Four for commercial or contract use, indicating its performance in several independently assessed wear and performance tests. At the same time, the label also says whether it can use light, medium, heavy or extra-heavy traffic. Therefore, check if the label has a registration number to ensure it’s genuine.

Moreover, it’s advisable for residential high-traffic areas, such as entranceways, stairs, and halls, to go for a heavy-duty carpet rating. Even so, children’s playrooms usually take a lot of punishment, so a durable carpet is worth considering.

Indeed, Wool carpets may also have a Woolmark or Fernmark label. These grading schemes, run by The Woolmark Company and Wools of New Zealand, show that the rug has met certain quality and durability standards.

Why the Underlay Pad Matters

Many overlook the importance of the underlay pad, but it plays a vital role in your carpet’s comfort, appearance, and longevity. A good-quality underlay acts as a shock absorber, protecting carpet fibres from premature wear while providing extra cushioning underfoot. It also improves insulation and sound absorption and even helps your carpet stay cleaner for longer by reducing dust penetration.

Choosing the right underlay pad ensures your investment in new carpet pays off — both in comfort and lifespan.
