For some people getting new carpeting is a necessity. For others, it’s a luxury. No matter what group you fall into or somewhere in between, a particular joy comes with brand-new carpeting. It’s fresh and clean and adds much character to your room. But all carpeting “settles” after a few months and takes on a not-so-new look. Traffic patterns are a major factor to consider when planning your carpet maintenance. The most frequently used areas will require the most care and attention. If you notice a spot that may become problematic, consider using area rugs to protect it. When cleaning your carpet, remove the area rugs to thoroughly clean underneath and prevent dirt from getting ground in. This also helps to avoid crushing in these areas.
It is recommended to move furniture regularly to prevent permanent damage to your carpet. You don’t need to redecorate the entire room; just move your furniture slightly to avoid permanent indentations. The depressions from the legs of your couch can become permanent if left too long. Use furniture glides or cups and move your furniture an inch or two regularly. Don’t despair when your new carpet leaves little tufts of carpet fibre; this is natural as the manufacturing process goes through these tiny remnants in the rug. They’ll gradually work themselves out of the pile and will come loose. Regular vacuuming will remove these tufts and keep your carpet looking healthy. Snip to the carpet level if a clump has risen above the surface but is still connected.
Again, frequent cleaning is necessary to prolong the life of your carpet. You can use products made explicitly for the stain you’re dealing with. If you have pets, stock up on pet-specific products to handle any messes they may cause. Most importantly, deal with spills, stains, and pet messes as quickly as possible, as some soil can penetrate the fibres and become permanent.
As a side note, you may notice a foul odour after installing the carpet. This can relate to the products installed; or the release of scents from the previous carpet and padding. Air out your home for a few days following carpet installation to remove all stale smells.
